Anyone else have goals to become more organized? I feel like each year, I have a goal to become more organized in some aspect of my teaching. Last year, it was my desk area. This year, it is with materials, mainly Math. I feel like I have so many resources that go unused, so I'm going to be a little more intentional with my long-range planning and find those resources NOW (over the summer) so that I can go back to my Math Planning Guides at the beginning of each Topic and try to stay more motivated to use all of my materials.
I created these Math Planning Guides to help me stay on track!
To give you an idea of how you might be able to use these guides, I have started my Topic 1--Understanding Addition and Subtraction planning. I don't have any of my printed files at home, so this is just what I can gather from the online resources and various files I already know I have prepped and/or digitally on my laptop.
I used my manual to fill out most of the first cover page. I also have a few supplemental pages I got from our Math Interventionist to help with the Standards and length of unit. For Homework, I use the Homework Practice Workbook. My sweeties just rip out the homework pages for each night.
Next, I have my Centers that I like to use during this unit. I know that Pearson provides some centers, but I like to use some very basic number and counting centers. I don't want to spend so much time on directions because I am also introducing Math Rotations during this Unit. I need everything to be simple so that we can focus more on routines.
For Technology Resources, I can use the Pearson website with the students' logins when we go to computer lab. It's also nice to have an idea of a BrainpopJr. video to use, should any of our lessons end early or we have an extra 10 minutes throughout the day. If you haven't heard of BrainpopJr., look it up! It is an AMAZING resource. I use it a LOT!
Then, we have a list of Intervention and Extension Resources. I hope to be able to add more to this once I get to school and see my files. Even if I can't find something, I know that each lesson does have a paired Reteaching and Enrichment lesson, if I need it.
Do you use Interactive Notebooks? I have used Math INBs for the past 2 years. I love them, and so do the students. Sometimes I forget that I have a coordinating INB page for a certain lesson, so these pages will help me remember to pull those INBs for each unit!
Cross-Curricular Activities are always fun! I love finding corresponding activities in other content areas that I can connect. This could be children's literature, craftivities, experiments, special snacks, connections to history/science, etc.
Independent practice would be anything the kids do on their own, whether it is for Morning Work, Lesson Work, etc. This is also something I'm sure I can add to once I can search through my files.
Pacing Guides are so important! This really helps you to see the unit as a whole and to plan accordingly within the arc of the unit. It also saves time! Who doesn't need a little extra time? By sketching a plan of how you want the whole unit to go, you can plug in your activities accordingly. If you need more detailed lessons for administration or yourself, you can do that in your plan book weekly. This particular unit is not a long unit, so I didn't need to use many of the blocks. Once I got my lessons written in, I could look at the scope and see where I could put in an INB page or a timed math facts test. It also helps when making your to do list of things you need to print/copy/prep.
That brings us to the last page. This is a pretty generic looking To Do list that you could use for planning your unit to keep track of what you need to print, copy, prep, or grade. I also put an "other" category for all of those "other" things that you may need to take care of. For me, I will be introducing Math Rotations during this unit, so I will need to be observing and looking at assessments to see how my Math Groups will shape up.
Even though this is simple, I know that taking a few minutes to have all my materials accounted for in one place will help me save time. I am always trying to save time! If you think this might be helpful for you, too, you can check it out in my TPT store:
As of right now, this list is only a printable list. I have received some requests to make it editable. I will have to "learn" how to do that, so that's on my list of things to do! Once I figure it out, I'll add the editable portion to the pack and will update it on my TPT page.
Have a great week and happy organizing! :)
